In most cosmetic products, preservatives are used to make the product microbial safe. The properties of the preservatives used for this purpose; the product must be protected during the shelf life.
The test for determining the effectiveness of preservatives in cosmetic products is called the challenge test.
The challenge test is one of the tests to show that the cosmetic product is microbially safe for the specified shelf life.
Challenge Test is carried out according to ISO 11930 international standard.
For protective efficacy testing, the test was performed by treating the microorganisms Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC 16404. The test period is approximately 35 days.
Challenge test is not mandatory for disposable products and products with an alcohol content of 20% and above, products with a pH of 3 and below, products with a pH of 10 and above, solvent-based products, oxidizing products, products with a water activity of less than, 0.75. . Since such products have a low microbiological risk, the challenge test may not be performed on these products. For cosmetic products other than this type of products, a challenge test should be performed.
